The Stars Group was a group of self-taught avant-garde artists that was founded in Beijing in 1979 and existed until 1983. The artists rejected propaganda art that was loyal to the regime and advocated individualism and freedom of expression in their work and public activities. Unofficial exhibitions, street demonstrations, and public readings were held. The sharp criticism and increasing political pressure led to the dissolution of the group in 1983, after which many of its members left China.
