Magic Realism

The term Magic Realism was coined in 1925 by the photographer and art critic Franz Roh, who used it to describe a modern realistic trend in painting with fantasy- or dream-like motifs, which today is regarded as a separate direction of New Objectivity characterised by sharp details. Due to contradictory, disconcerting elements, the realistic style of depiction smacks of the unreal and mysterious.
