Fantastic Realism

The term fantastic realism refers to a group of artists active in Vienna in the late 1940s who combined the painterly precision of the Old Masters with an interest in modern art movements and psychoanalysis. The paintings contained realistically painted, dreamlike visions from the unconscious and often refer to traumatic experiences from the Second World War. The art of Fantastic Realism also spread beyond the Viennese School and achieved international fame.
