The Beaver Hall Group was officially founded in May 1920 partly as a reaction to the conservative Montreal art scene. The main concern emphasised was the individual expression of a work of art, saying that it was the artist's right to paint what one felt, without taking into account the previous requirements for the acceptance of a work. The group was characterised by its equal inclusion of male and female artists, as well as the mixture of modern and traditional styles.
