In 1956, the artists' group SPUR was founded in Munich. The painters, who met at the Munich Art Academy, were united by the need to turn away from the restrictive academy business and concentrate on the formation of a common style. Describing themselves as "the painters of the future", they also dealt to a great extent with questions of art theory.
