Hudson River School

The Hudson River School was an American art movement in the mid-19th century that focused on landscape painting and whose aesthetic vision was influenced by Romanticism. The pictorial compositions of the circle of artists concentrated on the valley of the Hudson River north of New York. In contrast to allegorical landscapes, the artists were increasingly drawn in the direction of a pure, untouched depiction of nature in a realistic painting style that incorporated natural lighting conditions.
