The versatility and contradictions of Surrealism make it impossible to speak of a uniform style of art. Nor did the movement's representatives want Surrealism to be seen as just another style of modern art. The source of inspiration for artistic work became the dreamlike, the unreal, the confrontation with the strange, the unpredictable and the exploration of the dark sides of life.
