From the 1870s onwards, the Impressionist group placed landscape painting at the centre of their work and left the studio as their traditional place of work to paint outdoors instead. Naturalistic depictions were replaced by atmospheric, fleeting snapshots with a focus on the colours of nature under the influence of light.
