The art historian Jacob Burckhardt described the period of the Pre-Renaissance between the 11th and 13th centuries with the term "Proto-Renaissance". Centuries before the Renaissance, isolated Italian artists, primarily from Tuscany, began to refer to the art of Greek and Roman antiquity in the fields of painting, sculpture and architecture.
