Alex Katz

Alex Katz was born in New York on July 24, 1927, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants. From 1946 to 1949 he studied art at the Cooper Union Art School in New York. With a scholarship he spends another year at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Here Alex Katz came to plein air painting, at the same time discovering his fondness for the state of Maine, to which he remained attached throughout his life. In 1954 he had his first solo exhibition in New York at the Roko Gallery. In 1960 and 1961 Alex Katz is among the artists exhibited at the Stable Gallery in New York, along with Robert Indiana and Andy Warhol. In 1957 Alex Katz met his second wife Ada Del Moro in New York, whom he married in 1958.
