Helmut Newton

The German-Australian photographer Helmut Newton, actually Helmut Neustädter, was born in Berlin on October 31, 1920. He spends his school years there and completes an apprenticeship as a photographer with the Berlin photographer Else Simon (Yva) from 1936-1938. As a German Jew, he was forced to flee Germany in 1938 and emigrated to Australia via Singapore. From 1942 to 1947 he served as a soldier in the Australian army, and in 1946 he became an Australian citizen. In 1948 Helmut Newton marries the actress and later photographer June Brown aka Alice Springs. He begins working for Vogue and other fashion magazines. In 1956, the couple moves to London, where Helmut Newton starts working for English Vogue. They travel extensively throughout Europe. From 1957 they lived in Paris, where Helmut Newton became one of the most sought-after and expensive fashion and portrait photographers. He photographs for the magazines Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Nova, Queen, Jardin des Modes, Life, Playboy, Stern and others and from the 1960s is one of the world's most renowned and most published photographers.
