Sam Francis was born on June 25 in San Mateo, California. In 1941 he began studying botany, psychology and medicine at the University of Califonia in Berkeley before becoming a soldier in the American Air Force in 1943. In a plane crash, he severely injured his spine. During the lengthy recovery period, Sam Francis occupied himself with art, which led him to resume studies in fine arts and art history at the University of Berkeley in 1948. His teachers included Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. In 1950 Sam Francis went to Paris and attended the painting school of Fernand Léger.
