The French-American object artist Arman was born in Nice on November 17, 1928, the son of an antique dealer. His civil name is Armand Pierre Fernandez. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh, he signed his artistic works early on only with his first name Armand. After a printing error on the invitation card to a group exhibition in 1958 at the Galerie Iris Clert in Paris, he adopted "Arman" as his artist's name.
