Tom Wesselmann was born on February 23 in Cincinnati, Ohio. After college, he attended the University of Cincinnati from 1949 to study psychology. However, his studies were interrupted in 1953 by a two-year tour of duty as a soldier in the Korean War. During this time Tom Wesselmann began drawing cartoons. In 1954 he finished his studies in psychology, but at the same time he intensively pursued a career as a draftsman and enrolled at the Art Academy in Cincinnati. In 1956 Tom Wesselmann went to New York, where he was accepted at the Cooper Union Art School and studied until 1959. In 1957 Tom Wesselmann met Claire Selley, who studied with him at Cooper Union and became his model, and later his wife.
