Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden on February 9, 1932. 1951-1956 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, graduated in 1956 and remained at the academy until 1960, before moving from the then GDR to West Germany in 1961, a few months before the border was closed and the Wall built. In Düsseldorf Gerhard Richter now attends the State Art Academy until 1964, meets friends Konrad Lueg, Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo, studies with K. O. Götz. In 1964 Gerhard Richter's first solo exhibition took place at the Galerie Schmela in Düsseldorf, in the same year he also exhibited at the Galerie René Block in Berlin and together with Konrad Lueg and Sigmar Polke at the Galerie Parnass in Wuppertal.
