The American artist Robert Motherwell was born on January 24, 1915 in Aberdeen, Washington. He became enthusiastic about art at an early age and copied the works of the great masters. From 1932 he attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, then studied philosophy at Stanford University until 1937, before continuing his studies for a short time at Harvard University, where he dealt with questions of aesthetics and the philosophy of art. In his final thesis, he studied Eugène Delacroix's diary. He travels to France for this in 1938, studying in Grenoble and Paris, where he paints himself in addition to working on his thesis. In 1939 he returned to the USA and lived in New York.
