The Hungarian-born French artist Victor Vasarely was born Gyözö Vásárhelyi in Pécs on April 9, 1906. In Budapest he began to study medicine in 1925, but soon turned to art. From 1929 he attended the Mühely Private Art School in Budapest, run by Sandor Bortnyik on the model of the Bauhaus in Weimar. Bortnyik himself had attended the Bauhaus and became a decisive mediator of modernist ideas for Victor Vasarely.
