The French painter and sculptor Jean Dubuffet was born in Le Havre on July 31, 1901, the son of a wealthy wine merchant family. While still at school, he attended drawing classes at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre, and in 1918 he went to Paris to attend the Académie Julian. After these artistic beginnings, Jean Dubuffet nevertheless became a wine merchant and worked for many years in his father's wine wholesale business.
