Takashi Murakami

1962 Tokyo
The Japanese Takashi Murakami was born in Tokyo on February 1, 1962, the son of a cab driver and a textile designer. In 1980 he enrolled at the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo and studied classical painting in the Japanese style (Nihonga). In 1993 he received his doctorate here. While still a student, he also became intensively involved with cartooning and was interested in Japanese anime and manga culture. In 1994 Takashi Murakami travels to New York on a scholarship from the Asian Cultural Council, where he participates in the study program of the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center.
