Salvador Dali

1904 Figueras - 1989 Figueras
The Spanish painter, graphic artist, sculptor, writer and narcissistic self-dramatizer Salvador Dalí was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Catalonia, near Barcelona. His talent for painting was recognized at an early age and he attended evening classes at the municipal drawing school in addition to school. In 1921 he began studying art at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid; he was close friends with Luis Buñuel and Federico García Lorca. Together they studied the writings of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, which Dalí once described as the greatest discovery of his life. In 1926 Salvador Dalí had to leave the art academy because of his eccentric behavior and his questioning of the authority of his teachers. In 1925 and 1926, two solo exhibitions of his works were held at the Dalmau Gallery in Barcelona. In 1926 and 1928 Salvador Dalí traveled to Paris, where he moved in 1929. There, his compatriot Joan Miró introduced him to the painters and poets of Surrealism around André Breton, who became their spokesman with the formulation of the "Manifeste du Surréalisme" of 1924. Salvador Dalí illustrated the works of André Breton, Paul Éluard and Tristan Tzara. In 1927 he created "Blood is Sweeter than Honey" (lost), Dalí's first painting considered Surrealist.
