Albrecht Dürer was born in Nuremberg on May 21, 1471. His father was a goldsmith there and took the son into his workshop as an apprentice, where he practiced drawing the detailed, finely crafted goldsmith's work. From 1486 to 1490 Albrecht Dürer was an apprentice to the respected Nuremberg painter Michael Wolgemut, with whom he received comprehensive basic training in the painting trade.
