Shepard Fairey (b. 1970) Hope For Darfur (three works), 2007 Stencil and mixed media; screenprint in colors on paper; color photograph 24 x 12 inches (61.0 x 30.5 cm) (largest, screenprint) A.P. (screenprint) Each signed; collage and screenprint dated Published by Obey Giant, Los Angeles PROVENANCE: Collection of Brian Steidle, photographer and collaborator on the project. Offered directly from the collection of photographer Brian Steidle, this group brings together the source photograph and two related works from Shepard Fairey’s 2008 Hope for Darfur project. Steidle’s photograph of a Sudanese refugee provided the image for the series, giving the group a direct connection to both its subject and its creation. Fairey created the artwork at the invitation of Global Grassroots to raise awareness of the genocide in Darfur. Writing about the project, he explained that watching The Devil Came on Horseback, which documents Steidle’s experience as an African Union observer in Sudan, brought home the gravity of the crisis. Fairey committed all proceeds from the original print sales to the HOPE campaign, covering the printing costs himself. According to Steidle, the spray-painted stencil and mixed-media work is one of only two original versions created for the initial fundraiser. The accompanying screenprint artist’s proof bears the signatures of both Fairey and Steidle, while the signed source photograph allows the viewer to trace the image’s transformation from photographic record to graphic artwork. Preserved together by Steidle since 2008, these three works document the collaboration behind Hope for Darfur and offer a rare opportunity for Shepard Fairey collectors to acquire a group drawn directly from the photographer’s personal collection.
