After Medardo Rosso (Italian, 1858-1928) Cantante a spasso (The wandering singer); Gli innamorati sotto il lampione (Lovers under the lamppost) (two works) Posthumous casts (each) Bronze (each) 11-1/4 x 11-1/2 x 10 inches (28.6 x 29.2 x 25.4 cm) The first: signed behind figure on base: M Rosso Property from the Dr. Sheldon G. and Irma H. Gilgore Collection of Italian Art 1850-1925 PROVENANCE: Each: Eric Manasse, New York; Acquired from the above. EXHIBITED: The first: The Gilgore Collection, Naples, Florida, "The Winds of Change, The Milanese Avant-Garde 1860-1900," December 8, 2003, no. 29. The second: The Gilgore Collection, Naples, Florida, "The Winds of Change, The Milanese Avant-Garde 1860-1900," December 8, 2003, no. 28. Created in the first years of his career, Cantante a spasso is a self-referential image (perhaps a self-portrait) of a bohemian—a fitting subject for an artist who defied convention—while Gli innamorati sotto il lampione explores the sculptor's interest in depicting figures seemingly fused by sculptural matter. Both may derive from the roughly modeled statuettes of Rosso's influential predecessor Giuseppe Grandi (Winds of Change, exh. cat., pp. 89–90).
