Jacobsen when he stayed with the artist in Rome in the mid-1890s. Jacobsen had been sent to Rome by fellow Dutch artist Hendrik Willem Mesdag, an important supporter and collector of Mancini's work. The drawing's grid pattern recalls Mancini's use of the graticola (see lot 69084) or, as Cinzia Virno has suggested, may have served as a teaching method in transferring drawing to oil works for Jacobsen (see also U. W. Hiesinger, Antonio Mancini: Nineteenth-Century Italian Master, exh. cat., Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2007–2008, pp. 67, 115–16). The present work is registered in the Antonio Mancini Archive, Rome, and will be included in Dott.
