Antonio Mancini (Italian, 1852-1930) Seated prelate figure; Standing female nude (verso), 1892 Charcoal, chalk and sepia on paper 23 x 17-1/2 inches (58.4 x 44.5 cm) Signed, dated, and inscribed lower right: 1892 / A. Mancini to his friend Jacobson / Rome Property from the Dr. Sheldon G. and Irma H. Gilgore Collection of Italian Art 1850-1925 PROVENANCE: Katrin Bellinger, Munich; Acquired from the above, February 21, 2002. Antonio Mancini dedicated the present work to the Dutch painter John J. Jacobsen when he stayed with the artist in Rome in the mid-1890s. Jacobsen had been sent to Rome by fellow Dutch artist Hendrik Willem Mesdag, an important supporter and collector of Mancini's work. The drawing's grid pattern recalls Mancini's use of the graticola (see lot 69084) or, as Cinzia Virno has suggested, may have served as a teaching method in transferring drawing to oil works for Jacobsen (see also U. W. Hiesinger, Antonio Mancini: Nineteenth-Century Italian Master, exh. cat., Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2007–2008, pp. 67, 115–16). The present work is registered in the Antonio Mancini Archive, Rome, and will be included in Dott. Cinzia Virno's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of pastels, drawings, and minor arts by Antonio Mancini. The lot is accompanied by Dott. Virno's certificate dated April 14, 2026. We thank Dott. Virno for providing additional catalogue information. HID12401132022 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
