Philippe Halsman (American, 1906-1979) Salvador Dali Set for "Sentimental Colloquy", Ballet International at the International Theatre, 1944 Gelatin silver print 9-1/4 x 8 inches (23.5 x 20.3 cm) (image/sheet) Titled in ink and with the photographer's studio and Jean Dalrymple collection stamps, verso. Sentimental Colloquy is a surrealist painting and set design by Salvador Dalí for a ballet of the same name. Inspired by a Paul Verlaine poem, it features a dreamlike landscape with, notably, a series of cyclists with stones on their heads and a large, water-spouting, piano. The scene parodies bourgeois culture and reflects themes of extreme loneliness, featuring a mechanical tortoise and figures in surreal surroundings. The ballet, with music by Paul Bowles and choreography by André Eglevsky, premiered at the International Theatre in New York on October 30, 1944.
