Brassaï (French, 1899-1984) La Cité Radieuse, Marseilles, c. 1952 Gelatin silver print 11-5/8 x 9-1/8 inches (29.6 x 23.2 cm) (image/sheet) Titled Le Corbusier, variously inscribed and notated in pencil, stamped 'Made in France' and with the photographer's studio stamp, verso. In 1920, Le Corbusier (1887-1965) started to develop the Unité d'Habitation type, which became influential in 20th century architectural modernism and contemporary residential design in Europe. The first realizations were built in Paris and Marseille in the 1940s as high-rise concrete structures. La Cité Radieuse, Marseilles, built between 1947-1952, was the first and most famous of these Unité d'Habitation buildings and it proved enormously influential, particularly on the Brutalist school.
