The oeuvre of Adolf Luther occupies a defining position within German light art, combining key aspects of conceptual thought with visual experience. At the centre of his artistic practice are light, space and movement, which he explored not merely as compositional devices but as autonomous phenomena in their own right. Through deliberate reflections and optical distortions, Luther created works that challenge perception and actively involve the viewer.

Originally trained as a lawyer, Luther turned to art in the 1940s and later abandoned his legal profession entirely. Following initial painterly experiments, he recognised the potential of light as a central artistic element. From the late 1950s onwards, he investigated its physical properties, increasingly employing materials such as glass in order to concentrate, refract and reflect light. From this emerged a distinctive visual language founded upon immateriality and energetic effect.

Luther is particularly renowned for his concave mirror objects, which he began producing in the late 1960s. The present work, dating from 1970, consists of twelve concave glass lenses arranged into an impressive overall composition. The spherical elements multiply and distort the surrounding environment, creating a dynamic interplay between artwork, space and viewer. Depending on the perspective, the appearance shifts continuously, dissolving the boundary between real and abstract perception.

Luther also realised numerous works in public space that integrate architecture and light. His works received widespread recognition and distinction, including the conferral of the title of Professor in North Rhine-Westphalia. To this day, he is regarded as an important representative of an art form that renders matter perceptible through light and opens up new visual realities.
