Born in Freiburg in 1961, artist Katharina Grosse is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary art on the international scene. After studying under Norbert Tadeusz and Gotthard Graubner in Bremen and Düsseldorf—where she became Graubner’s master student—she developed a distinctive artistic style. She has garnered international attention since the 1990s, not least through her participation in the Sydney Biennale in 1998. Characteristic of her work is the use of a spray gun, with which she creates intense, luminous color compositions and extends painting beyond the boundaries of the canvas into the space. Walls, floors, and objects become the surfaces for a dynamic application of paint that intertwines painting, sculpture, and architecture. Standing in the tradition of abstract painting, Grosse transforms it into a spatial, immersive experience.
This large-format work on paper demonstrates a focused exploration of fundamental principles of painting. Unlike in her spray-painted works, the paint is applied here with a brush. In rhythmically arranged, diagonal strokes, green, red, yellow, and blue stripes cover the surface. The layers, some of which are transparent glazes, overlap to create a dense network of intersecting lines that oscillates between order and dynamism. Particularly in the lower section, the darker color zones condense into an almost two-dimensional counterpoint, while in the upper section, lighter, luminous accents dominate. The composition unfolds a strong spatial effect in which the bands of color overlap like a semitransparent fabric and lead into the depth. Within Grosses Oeuvre, these works on paper mark a return to the immediate act of painting, in which rhythm, layering, and the physical trace of the brush come to the fore.
