Unknown Photographer (20th Century) Aftermath of a Pogrom in the Ukraine, circa 1902 Bromide print 7 x 9-1/4 inches (17.8 x 23.5 cm) (image/sheet) Indistinctly inscribed in ink, mount verso. PROVENANCE: Swann Galleries, October 7, 1999, lot 341; Private collection. "A rare and important pictorial document, pertaining to the town of Gomel, that shows a group of yeshiva students tending to the dead, who are laid out in their tallises (prayer shawls). Like so many Jewish villages, this one's nationality changed from Russian to Polish depending on the shifting political winds. The Tsar and his chief ministers allowed pogroms to flourish, always blaming such slaughters on the Jews themselves."
