Marina Abramovic (b. 1946) Gold Mask, 2009 Digital pigment print 50 x 50 inches (127 x 127 cm) A.P. 1/2 (aside from an edition of 9) PROVENANCE: The artist; Private collection, Richmond, United Kingdom, acquired from the above, 2010. In Gold Mask, Marina Abramović transforms her own face into something timeless and almost sacred. Covered in shimmering gold and emerging dramatically from a dark background, she appears somewhere between a living person, an icon, and a mask. The work beautifully reflects Abramović's larger practice, in which her own body has served as both subject and artistic material. For more than five decades, she has been one of the pioneering figures of performance art, pushing the boundaries between artist and audience and exploring endurance, vulnerability, ritual, and the power of human presence. Unlike the physical extremes of many of her earlier performances, Gold Mask achieves its intensity through stillness and the directness of her gaze. Created in 2009, shortly before her landmark 2010 performance The Artist Is Present at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the image seems almost to anticipate that extraordinary concentration on looking, presence, and the silent encounter between artist and viewer. At an impressive 50 inches square, Gold Mask has a commanding physical presence, transforming Abramović herself into an image that feels at once contemporary, ritualistic, and timeless.
