Barry McGee (b. 1966) Untitled, 2013 Ink on recycled lampshades 9 x 7-1/2 x 7-1/2 inches (22.9 x 19.1 x 19.1 cm) (each) PROVENANCE: The artist; Cheim & Read, New York; Private collection, United Kingdom. Born in San Francisco, Barry McGee emerged from the Bay Area graffiti scene to become one of the most influential artists associated with the Mission School movement. His work draws upon street culture, found materials, and hand-drawn imagery to explore themes of community, identity, and urban life. Created in 2013, Untitled features two recycled lampshades transformed by McGee's distinctive ink drawings. Each shade is adorned with a stylized face composed of simplified lines and expressive eyes, a recurring motif throughout the artist's oeuvre. By repurposing everyday objects, McGee blurs the boundaries between fine art and the vernacular, elevating discarded materials through his direct and highly recognizable visual language. Intimate in scale yet rich in character, Untitled exemplifies McGee's longstanding interest in found objects and handmade mark-making. The work reflects the playful inventiveness and immediacy that have defined his practice for more than three decades.
