Gilgore Collection of Italian Art 1850-1925 PROVENANCE: Paul Nichols, Milan; Acquired from the above. EXHIBITED: The Art Institute of Chicago and Denver Art Museum, "Chiseled with a Brush: Italian Sculpture, 1860-1925, from the Gilgore Collections," May 14, 1994 - January 29, 1995, no. 27; The Gilgore Collection, Naples, Florida, "The Winds of Change, The Milanese Avant-Garde 1860-1900," 2003, no. 3. LITERATURE: G. Cena, "Considerazioni sulla Scultura," La Triennale, no. 12, 1896, p. 94, no. 12 (another example illustrated); G. Cena, "Leonardo Bistolfi," La Nuova Antologia, no. 67, 1905, p. 3 (another example illustrated); Palazzo Trevile, Mostra Presso il Mueso Civico, exh. cat., 1971, p. 18 (another example illustrated); Palazzo Langosco Bistolfi, Casale Monferato, Italy, Bistolfi 1859-1933: Il Percoso di Uno Scultore Simbolista, exh. cat., 1984, pp. 69, 219 (another example illustrated); G. Mazza, The Leonardo Bistolfi Plaster Cast Gallery, Civic Museum, Casale Monferrato, 2001, p. 72, no. 11 (another example illustrated). Conceived 1892-93, the romantic Il crepuscolo is one of Leonardo Bistolfi's last naturalistic works before his turn toward Symbolism. A man reclines atop a parapet while a woman rests against him, their forms dissolving into the heavily worked surrounding space, suggesting the liminal, dreamlike atmosphere of twilight and the intimacy of their relationship. The sculpture possesses a distinctly pictorial quality in the placement of the figures, and in its impressionistic handling of form, paralleling the work of Paolo Troubetzkoy (see lot 69079; Chiseled with a Brush, exh. cat., p. 108).
