Gilgore Collection of Italian Art 1850-1925 PROVENANCE: Giuseppe Chierichetti; Galleria Pesaro, Milan, 1926, no. 169, plate XXIV, as La Castellana; Toscanini Collection; Interart Cultural Exchange, New York; Acquired from the above, October 19, 1992. EXHIBITED: [Probably] Palazzo della Societa per le belle arti, Milan, Italy, "Associazione degli Acquarellisti lombardi," 1911; Galleria Pesaro, Milan, Italy, "Luigi Conconi", December 1920, no. 83 as "Dama di Coppe"; The Gilgore Collection, Naples, Florida, "The Winds of Change, The Milanese Avant-Garde 1860-1900," 2003, no. 50. LITERATURE: R. Giolli, Luigi Conconi, Architetto e pittore, Alfieri & LaCroix, Rome and Milan, 1920, Tavola XXVI, p. 68, illustrated; G. Ginex, "Luigi Conconi. Works in the Gilgore Collection," in Winds of Change, The Milanese Avant Garde 1860-1908, exh. cat., pp. 124-5. Painted circa 1910, La regina di coppe is a watercolor on parchment, a particularly challenging support, illustrating Luigi Conconi's virtuosic skill and evoking the medieval subject he depicts. Conconi used parchment for numerous miniature commissions, the material lending his compositions a distinct softness and muted chromatic unity. The present work was acquired by Giuseppe Chierichetti, an important collector of modern Italian painting, whose collection was sold in the 1920s. Conconi was particularly drawn to watercolor, and as a founding member of the Associazione Lombarda degli Acquerellisti (Lombard Watercolorists) established in Milan in 1910, he exhibited works such as this at the Palazzo della Permanente. In 1915, La regina di coppe was replicated as a mirror-image etching and a monotype (Ginex, pp. 124-5).
