Joel-Peter Witkin (American, b. 1939) Couple, 1978 Gelatin silver print, printed later 11 x 10-3/4 inches (27.9 x 27.3 cm) (image) 14 x 11-3/8 inches (sheet) Signed in ink, lower margin recto. In 1978, when Joel-Peter Witkin was a student at the University of New Mexico, he placed an ad for the sale of a small number of prints in the 11x14 size. An artist friend of mine and I each bought one. This is the one I acquired, and as we all know, following his graduation with a Master's from the same institution in 1981, Witkin's trajectory was straight up. I have enjoyed living with this early and seminal image from his student days. The print is exquisite. Neutral toned print on semi-gloss, double-weight paper with irregular black borders and margins. Minor paper cockling at top and bottom edges, not affecting the image. In excellent condition. Sold matted and unframed.
