Aaron Siskind (American, 1903-1991) Rome 162 (Homage to Franz Kline), 1973 Gelatin silver print 9-1/4 x 9-1/2 inches (23.5 x 24.1 cm) (image) 14 x 11 inches (sheet) Signed, titled, and dated in ink, margin recto. Titled and dated in pencil, verso. Aaron Siskind started his career as a high school English teacher for 21 years, before venturing out into the treacherous waters of the then-nascent photography world. Hanging out at the Cedar Bar in the Village, he met and came to know the abstract expressionist painters, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and others and at some point Aaron's experiments with abstractions on walls began cross feeding back to these painters. This particular print pays homage to the great painter Franz Kline, who was a long and dear friend of Siskind's.
