Christopher Killip (British, 1946) Girl Collecting Money for Guy Fawkes Day, Gateshead, Tyneside, 1979 Gelatin silver print, printed c. 1979. Signed in pencil, verso. image: 11 x 13-5/8 inches (27.9 x 34.7 cm) sheet: 15 x 19 inches PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist. LITERATURE: G. Badger, Chris Killip, London, Phaidon 55, 2001, np. Guy Fawkes Day, also known as Bonfire Night, takes places each year in the UK (also, more recently, in Canada and Australia) on November 5 to commemorate the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 in which Guy Fawkes and fellow Catholic co-conspirators plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I. The plot was discovered before it could be carried out, however, and Fawkes and company were duly arrested and executed. Neutral toned print on semi-gloss, double-weight paper with margins. Tiny nick, lower margin edge towards left hand corner, not affecting the image. A beautiful print of Killip's touching image, in very good condition. Loose print, sold unmatted and unframed.
