Lot Details
Yoshiyuki Iwase (Japanese, 1904-2001) Untitled (Reclining nude), 1955 Gelatin silver print, printed 1955. Photographer's stamp and seal, verso. image/ sheet: 13-3/4 x 16-3/8 inches (35.1 x 41.5 cm) PROVENANCE: Things Japanese, Kyoto. Award-winning photographer Yoshiyuki Iwase was born in Onjuku, a fishing village near Tokyo. Although heir to a whisky distillery, he opted instead to become a photographer, documenting the traditional life of the people living on the Chiba peninsula and focusing particularly on the women and girls (ama) who harvested abalone and seaweed by free-diving into the sea. These women also inspired a spectacular series of modernist nudes, represented in this lot and in two others found elsewhere in this sale, all three glorious vintage prints. Things Japanese, Kyoto.
Neutral toned print on semi-gloss, double-weight paper, trimmed to edges. A rare and beautiful vintage print by Iwase, in excellent condition.
