Graham Nickson (1946-2025) Untitled from Bather Series, 1980 Acrylic on joined canvas in artist's frame 48 x 48 inches (121.9 x 121.9 cm) Signed twice on the reverse stretchers: Graham Nickson PROVENANCE: Betty Cuningham Gallery, New York; Private collection, New York. "I'm interested in things that are opposites – dichotomies. Obsession, and what you do with it, is part of that double thing: it is obsessive, but it is good for you. How can you paint bathers for thirty years? How can you paint sunsets for such a long time? Well, you can if you feel that they are as still as thrilling and challenging as they were from the first. Another dichotomy is trying to make something monumental out of something transient, trying to make something transient out of the monumental. In the large paintings, it is a long road to closure." Graham Nickson: Beer with a Painter: Graham Nickson (interview). Interview and text by Jennifer Samet. New York: Hyperallergic, July 12, 2014.
