Arnold Newman (American, 1918-2006) Max Ernst, New York, 1942 Gelatin silver print, printed later 18-1/2 x 14-1/4 inches (47.0 x 36.2 cm) (image) 20 x 16 inches (sheet) Signed, titled, and dated in pencil, lower margin recto. Photographer's copyright reproduction limitation studio stamp, verso. PROVENANCE: The artist; Abe Frajndlich, acquired from the above, circa 1994. This 20 x16 inch gelatin silver print of Ernst, in that elegant chair and with smoke swirling around his head, is from a series that Arnold started making of artists in the late 1930's, which was augmented when lots of European artists sought refuge in the States during World War II, and somehow became subjects for Arnold's camera. In 1945, Newman had a major exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, called "Artists Look Like This" and this was a significant image in that show.
