Ilse Bing (German/American, 1899-1998) Moulin Rouge, Self Portrait, 1931 Gelatin silver print, printed later 8-1/2 x 12-5/8 inches (21.6 x 32.1 cm) (image) 11 x 14 inches (sheet) Signed in ink, verso. PROVENANCE: The artist; Abe Frajndlich, acquired from the above, circa 1993. When Ilse Bing printed this image, close to the time when it was first exposed, she would always crop herself in mirror on the right side, out of the final print, which was usually about 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm.), a common paper size in the thirties. When I saw the full negative in the early 1990's in my darkroom, and after I had printed her very famous self portrait of 1931, the same year, it was clear to me that having the reflected image of the photographer, Ilse Bing, in the print was essential to its meaning. When I showed Ilse the first print, now totally reinterpreted, she was delighted by the transformation of her own work. It was being looked at through the eyes of a younger generation of photographers, and she heartily approved.
