Lot Details
Sam Haskins (South African, 1926-2009) Maquette for "Cowboy Kate and Other Stories," 1964 Gelatin silver prints comprising 125 images and 7 dummy text pages, mounted back to back. In total 203 gelatin silver prints make up the maquette, with 2 images appearing on the right hand page of the first and third spread of ‘Model Artist Model' that differ in the first edition of Cowboy Kate & Other Stories: two additional spreads at the end of ‘Model Artist Model' appear only in the maquette. The majority approximately 13-3/4 x 10-1/2 inches (34.9 x 26.7 cm) (images/sheets) PROVENANCE: The Estate of Sam Haskins; Christie's London, Friday May 20, 2016, lot 4; A Distinguished Private Collection, London, acquired from the above. One of four complete maquettes of his seminal publication Cowboy Kate and Other Stories, Haskins kept one copy back and used the others as presentation tools to show to potential publishers, as well as a reference for technical production meetings with plate-makers and printers. There are three 'chapters' in the maquette -- Cowboy Kate, The Apprentice, and Model Artist Model. Haskins' son has been quoted as saying ‘Each one [maquette] was a huge labor of love – Sam made all the silver prints, designed the books and assembled each maquette personally – so you can imagine that put an upper limit on the quantity.' Haskins sequenced the book himself using the rhythm of tone, grain and contrast as key design elements to create the distinctive narrative flow of his images. Given the innovative presentation of these nudes, which Haskins handled with such a light and playful touch, Cowboy Kate enjoyed huge commercial success and was highly influential on the subsequent approaches of other photographers. The book won the prestigious Prix Nadar in 1964 and was a highlight of an important exhibition, The History of the Photographic Book from 1878 to the Present held at the International Center for Photography in New York in 2004. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of these extraordinary maquettes for this seminal publication and Heritage is honored to have been entrusted with its sale. The Estate of Sam Haskins; Christie's London, Friday May 20, 2016, lot 4; A Distinguished Private Collection, London, acquired from the above.
Each a neutral toned print on glossy, coated paper, trimmed to edges and mounted back to back on card, this bound into a large 4 to volume. Prints with wear that is consistent with ferrotyped coating -- fine scratches, abraded areas, small dings, creases etc., small surface imperfections; wear at edges. Binding shows some light wear, with remains of label (?) on front cover. A wonderful, possibly now unique object, in very good condition overall.
