Lot Details
Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) Self Portrait with Fright Wig, 1986 Unique Polaroid print 3-3/4 x 2-7/8 inches (9.5 x 7.3 cm) (image) 4-1/4 x 3-5/8 inches (sheet) Embossed with photographer's blindstamp, lower margin recto. Property from the Collection of Frederick H. Schrader, Napa Valley PROVENANCE: Pace MacGill Gallery, New York; Collection of the above. This Polaroid is one of several taken by Warhol as preparation for a series of large-scale screen prints commissioned by Anthony D'Offay for a 1986 exhibition at his London gallery. In these images, subsequently translated into prints, Warhol's skull-like head is dramatically separated from his body, appearing to float against a dark backdrop. The composition notably echoes a photographic portrait of Warhol by Robert Mapplethorpe from the same year. Both portraits feature Warhol wearing his iconic silver wig; however, in this particular Polaroid, his hair stands upright in a frenzied manner, and his intense gaze captivates the viewer. These self-portraits constitute the final series Warhol completed before his death in 1987. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
Pace MacGill Gallery, New York; Collection of the above.
Overall excellent condition. A few minor hairline scratches visible under raking light and closer inspection. Some faint toning to the margins when removed from frame and window mat. Sheet is cornered to a window mat and framed under glass measuring 14 x 12 inches.
