A Russian Art Nouveau Matte Enameled, Gold-Mounted, and Diamond-Set Rock Crystal Frame Fabergé, Moscow, circa 1898 2-1/2 inches (6.3 cm) 42 grams This frame is an exceptional example of the high quality of the objects produced by the Moscow workshops in a realm usually dominated by the workmasters of St. Petersburg. The unusually transparent rock crystal panel which forms the face of the frame centers a circular aperture surrounded by rose-cut diamonds offset by an art nouveau-inspired spray of water lilies and leaves, delicately rendered in translucent matte greens and shades of peach and apricot. The work bears comparison to another Moscow-made rock crystal frame now in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (No. 47.20.351) with similar construction.
