In 1782, Tsesarevich and Grand Duke Paul Petrovich and his wife, Maria Foeodorovna traveled around Europe incognito as the "Count and Countess du Nord". Travelling incognito meant they could visit as tourists, rather than a formal state visit by an heir to a foreign throne which required elaborate etiquette. Paul and Maria were exceptionally popular, and their tour included visits to France, Italy and Austria. The offered lot, copied after the 1799 portrait by Jean-Louis Voille, may have been painted circa 1801 to commemorate the death of Paul I, assassinated by his own men in March of that year.
