Frank McCarthy (American, 1924-2002) Ambush at the Ancient Rock Oil on canvas 28 x 32 inches (71.1 x 81.3 cm) Signed and inscribed lower right: McCarthy / CA Signed, titled, and inscribed on the reverse: B. 65 "Ambush at the Ancient Rock" All rights Reserved Frank McCarthy PROVENANCE: Private collection, Las Vegas, Nevada. Frank McCarthy's interest in Western subjects stemmed from his early fascination with history and adventure. Born in New York City, McCarthy was far removed from the physical West, but he grew up enthralled by stories of the frontier. He studied at the prestigious Art Students League and the Pratt Institute, where he honed his craft. Early in his career, McCarthy worked as a commercial illustrator, creating book covers and movie posters. His skill in storytelling through imagery translated seamlessly into his paintings, where his talent for depicting intense action and movement came to life. A major turning point in McCarthy's career occurred when he transitioned from commercial art to fine art in the 1970s. By then, McCarthy had already created notable movie posters, including for films like The Ten Commandments and The Great Escape. However, it was his Western scenes that resonated with a growing audience of collectors. McCarthy often depicted historical events, but he also focused on everyday life on the frontier. His attention to detail and commitment to authenticity earned him tremendous accolades in the Western Art world. He meticulously researched the clothing, weapons, and landscapes of the Old West, ensuring that his depictions were as accurate as possible. McCarthy's work is fueled by dramatic tension, where the characters are caught in a moment of danger, decision, and conflict -- a common theme that is woven into the fabric of his oeuvre. These works convey a sense of impending movement, making the viewer feel as if they are witnessing the scene unfold in real time. Ambush at the Ancient Rock captures this iconic moment of tension. This dynamic scene of cavalry soldiers charging through rocky outcrops beneath a bright blue sky captures the intense and adventurous spirit of the cavalry's role in the untamed wilderness. McCarthy's exquisite attention to detail, experience in cinematic illustration, and storytelling abilities continue to captivate audiences who deeply love the tales of the great American West.
