Arthur Szyk (Polish-American, 1894-1951) Herkimer at the Battle of Oriskany, 1931 Watercolor on paper laid on board 7 x 5-1/8 inches (17.8 x 13.0 cm) (sight) Signed, dated, and inscribed lower right: Arthur Szyk. Paris 1931 Property from the Nelkin Collection PROVENANCE: Christie's, New York, March 18, 1983, lot 17; The Nelkin Collection. Arthur Szyk created several works that focused on the American Revolution, often depicting key figures like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin in his illuminated style. These illustrations emphasized the ideals of the Founding Fathers while drawing parallels to contemporary battles for freedom during an era of growing totalitarianism and oppression in Europe. Here, he shows General Nicholas Herkimer, who played a crucial role in the Battle of Oriskany, which took place on August 6, 1777. Leading a force of local militia to relieve the besieged Fort Stanwix, Herkimer and his men were ambushed by British forces and their Native American allies. Though severely wounded early in the battle, Herkimer continued to direct his troops with great bravery, helping to turn the tide in favor of the American forces despite heavy casualties.
