Lot Details
Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) (Japanese, 1786-1865) New Year, from the series The Five Festivals (Gosekku no uchi), circa 1835 Woodblock print 9 x 11-5/8 inches (22.9 x 29.5 cm) (sheet, uchiwa-e) Published by Fūgetsudō Property from the Nelkin Collection HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
A charming print of a bijin holding a cat; sheet already cut and made into a fan. The condition of the work is consistent with its use as a fan. Mild toning throughout the sheet, a few areas of foxing/deeper staining primarily evident along edges and in center of sheet. Jagged/roughly cut edges with some thinning evident in lower corners. Several vertical creases consistent with mounting to the fan's bones. A few small (largest appears to measure 1/2" round) liquid stains in lower right quadrant with tidelines within image area. Unframed.
