G. Harvey (American, 1933-2017) Turning the Herd Oil on canvas 24 x 30 inches (61.0 x 76.2 cm) Signed lower left: G. Harvey Titled on the stretcher bar: Turning the Heard PROVENANCE: Private collection, Dallas. Turning the Herd is a fantastic example of renowned Texas and American artist G. Harvey taking inspiration from Western paintings of the nineteenth century, while adding his own signature atmospheric effects. Sheets of rain and blinding yellow lightning add drama to a classic action sequence, which is as beautiful as it is terrifying. Born and raised in his beloved Texas, Harvey never strayed far from that which inspired him -- his oil on canvas paintings and bronzes both reflect that state's romantic landscapes and peoples. Many of Harvey's paintings evoke the American masters. That's not to say that Harvey didn't experience success outside of the American Southwest -- he did. His work has been exhibited in some of the most famed galleries in the world including The Smithsonian and The Grand National Exhibition in 1965 (where he won the New Master's Award). Harvey died in 2017, leaving a legacy of achingly beautiful landscape paintings, evocative bronzes, and above all else, lasting love for his native Texas. It's obvious when viewing a Harvey that it is the work of a true American original. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
