Peter Beard (American, 1938-2020) Karen Blixen (Contact sheet and 2 prints from the sitting,) December 3, 1961 Gelatin silver contact sheet and two prints. Contact sheet: 11 x 8-1/2 inches (27.9 x 21.6 cm) Prints: each 6-3/4 x 4-3/8 inches (17 x 11 cm) PROVENANCE: Gift of the Artist. Karen Blixen (1885-1962), also known by her pen-name Isak Dinesen, a Danish national, came to Africa in 1914 to marry her half cousin Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke and help him run and a coffee plantation. However, neither the farm or the marriage flourished. After her divorce, Karen fell in love with an English aristocrat and big game hunter Denys Finch-Hatton, but his untimely death in Tsavo in 1930, coupled with the failure of the coffee farm, left her with little choice but to return to Denmark. She turned to writing as a career and published such works as Seven Gothic Tales (1934), Out of Africa (1937) and Babette's Feast (1950). Peter Beard was captivated by Out of Africa and visited her twice in Copenhagen in 1961 and 1962, making portraits of her on both occasions. A portion of the proceeds from this Auction will be donated to Aprile's Memorial French Bulldogs Special Needs Support Services. Aprile's Memorial French Bulldogs Special Needs Support Services, Inc. is organized exclusively for charitable purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and the New York Not-for-Profit Corporation Law. EIN: 99-1580540 This charity is devoted to the prevention of Special Needs and Handicapped Dogs, with a special focus on French Bulldogs from being abandoned, surrendered to shelters and rescues and from being euthanized because of their vulnerabilities. Through the charity's Stop And Think Educational Outreach Program and its Support Services Program they are improving upon the quality of life of dogs with special needs, providing support to the people who care for them and saving them from being euthanized. Aprile's Memorial French Bulldogs Special Needs Support Services is named after Audra Allen's sister, Aprile, who passed away unexpectedly. Contact sheet: neutral toned print on glossy paper with margins; some images have been cut out of teh sheet and it generally shows considerable wear, with extensive creasing (with some emulsion loss); small tears at upper right hand corner Prints: Each a neutral toned print on glossy, mid-weight paper, virtually trimmed to edges. Blixen Smoking: Few very minor and small hairline fissures (with no emulsion loss) along upper and lower edges; few minute dings etc. Both images in very good condition overall.
