Lot Details
Signed and inscribed in pencil, verso.
Bunny Yeager (American, 1929-2014) Dondi Penn with Chimpanzee in Car, 1959 Gelatin silver print, printed later 11-1/2 x 10-1/4 inches (29.2 x 26.0 cm) (image) 14 x 11 inches (sheet) Signed and inscribed in pencil, verso. From the collection of Grapefruit Moon Gallery Literature: P. Mason, Bunny Yeager's Darkroom: Pinup Photography's Golden Era, New York, pp. 188. Dondi Penn, one of Bunny Yeager's most beloved models, known for her signature tomboy hair and bombshell figure, is seen here with a chimpanzee who was featured in one of her most prominent photoshoots. Describing how she approached photostories such as this, Bunny said "each picture must serve the purpose of tying in with the rest of the photographs to tell an overall story." Though this work stands alone as a fascinating time capsule of Miami, the storytelling shines through. Toward the end of her life, Bunny Yeager found the critical acclaim that had overlooked her for much of her career, with celebrated exhibitions at galleries in Florida and beyond, and a museum exhibition at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. For these, Yeager reapproached her earlier work as works of fine art, creating museum quality exhibition sized prints such as the one seen here. Overall excellent condition. Minor bumping to the corners and slight creasing in the margins. Sheet is loose, not framed.
